Lack of Violence and Bullying


Entitlement
Entitlement is the belief that people have the right to use violence to express feeling, meet needs, or satisfy desires.

Tolerance
Tolerance occurs when violence is accepted as the norm by adults or young people who ignore, rationalize, or minimize incidents of violence.


Conflict is inevitable. Violence isn't.


Discussion questions:


Discuss the following questions with your group and write your answers.


1. Why do some students feel entitled to do violence?


2. Why do some parents think their children are entiled to do violence?


3. Why do some educators think students are entiled to do violence?

 

What is enabling violence?

Enabling violence is protecting a person from the consequences of their violent actions out of a sense of love, compassion, fear, or as a survival instinct.

What underlying factors would influence us to enable violence?

We contribute to the enabling system through our:

misguided beliefs

misguided feelings

misguided attitudes

misguided behaviors


Discuss the following questions with your group and record your answers.


1. Identify behaviors by staff that may encourage violence.
2. Identify behaviors by students that may encourage violence to continue or worsen.
3. Identify behaviors by parents that may encourage violence to continue or worsen.
